Retail sales value in Hong Kong grew 15.6% year-on-year to HK$25.1 billion in April, the Census and Statistics Department reported on Tuesday. Economists were looking for an 16.8% increase. Retail sales had increased 19% in March.
In volume terms, retail sales were up 12.4% in April, slower than the 19% increase in the preceding month. Economists had expected retail sales volume to rise 15.5%. Taking the first four months of 2010 together, total retail sales increased by 18% in value and 15% in volume terms from a year ago.
